Overview: Four generational family history novel of women in Jerusalem’s significant Sephardic community. Israeli author, best seller.

Rich with potent curses, outlandish customs, eccentric characters, and forbidden loves, readers might find the story somewhat incredible and hard to connect to. For those who are of a (Sephardic) community with similar mores, every detail rings true and immensely pleasurable to relive on the page. Fans of Gabriel Garcia Marquez will find much to love. The narrative is lush and rife with scandalous secrets of a passionately opinionated family that might find it easier to free themselves from the clutches of war, than from the family curse.

About the Group

The Sof Book Group began in 2005 by Carolann Biederman, founder and moderator. It’s an opportunity to foster community ruach by meeting in each other’s homes for lively discussions of fiction and nonfiction by Jewish authors and/or with themes that explore the Jewish experience. The discussion is moderated so that all voices are heard and the meeting stays timely. Books and dates are chosen in advance for the entire year. Members enjoy hosting the group at a rotation of homes. Hosts provide snacks and drinks. The vibe is positive, and we have a lot of fun
