High Holy Days Message From Our President

Jar of honey and pomegranates

We have a short time before Rosh Hashanah will be upon us and it is incumbent on me as your president to encourage you to continue your support for Congregation Sof Ma’arav on so many levels. First and foremost, it is my utmost gratitude for your membership to Congregation Sof Ma’arav. Without your love and support, our community would not be able to continue to be the model of achievement it is today. Sof was founded in 1971, 49 years ago, and next year will be our 50th anniversary to celebrate. How did we get this far for so long? There have been lots of caring, smart, devoted, committed people to continue this legacy in the middle of the Pacific. Don and I have been here for 17 years and joining Sof Ma’arav was a primary reason for our move. When I was recently ill, I thought of how much I cared about missing a Shabbat service. I am much better now and the feelings and passion for Sof Ma’arav are stronger than ever because being part of this enlightening and thriving community means the world to so many of us. The lifeblood of Sof Ma’arav has always been a beautiful Saturday morning experience, as we gather together to thank God for all the blessings that have been bestowed upon the Jewish Community in Hawaiʻi. As we continue to meet on zoom over the next few weeks, please take the opportunity to be with Sof in a way that we never imagined possible months ago. The ability to stay cohesive is quite miraculous. With both skill and passion, we have been able to reach heights of prayer together amidst circumstances beyond our control.

If you haven’t been on zoom lately, consider attending one of our zoom Shabbat services before High Holy Days on 9/5 and 9/12 between 9:50am and noon. Rosh Hashanah begins on Friday evening 9/18 and continues through the weekend on 9/19 and 9/20. Yom Kippur is Sunday evening 9/27 and Monday morning 9/28.
